Season 2016/17

Welcome to the 2016-2017 season.

This will be the 5th time I’ve had to write one of these now and you know what they say….practice makes perfect.  They also say there is always an exception to prove the rule.

So here we are heading into our second season in London 1 South after ultimately what proved to be a creditable 6th place finish (5th after Medway’s relegation, but I don’t count that). It was always going to be a tough season, having to follow on from the incredible ride that was the 14-15. Although, no silverware was won apart from the Kent Plate (which again, I’m not really counting as we didn’t even play the final!) I think what we achieved last year is still something to be proud of. A top half finish, with a very young team most of whom have stepped up to this level for the first time. Throw in on top of that a spate of injuries and the difficulty of the league means that quite rightly we should count the last campaign as a success.

The question now is, how do we build on this for the upcoming campaign? Well the coaching team has undergone significant changes.  Firstly, I’d like to thank the departed Paul and Stuart for their efforts over the course of the two seasons they were in charge. It’s not an easy job and not only did they ultimately help us reach Twickenham, they laid the foundations for us to move forward.
Taking over as Head Coach is Mike, who will bring a fresh view and approach to how the senior teams train, play and operate. He’ll be supported by Steve who’ll be keeping an eye on us forwards along with new player/coach Ben Massey,  and finally Max comes to us from Beckenham to take over as Mustangs Coach.

I’m also very happy to see Rich Weston return to the club as First Team manager and Rich “50 Shades” Gray take on the Mustangs manager role. Both are fantastic “club men” and will bring organisation and many bad jokes to the fold.

It’s not all going on off the pitch either. We’ve had some new faces join the club throughout the summer as well as some returning old ones. The current U17s have also been training with the seniors so that when they turn 18 throughout the course of the year they feel as comfortable as possible getting involved in adult rugby. I have to say, I have been so impressed with all of them and there are some real superstars of the future in the group. Although they obviously haven’t been told that it’s not wise to lap the club captain during the 12 minute run!

All in all, the above should really help the whole club kick on and develop further. This is always an on-going and ever changing process but with the right support and leadership in place there is no reason why we can’t achieve our overall goal for the club. To become once again, one of the top clubs in the county for every level of the game from the youngest touch player to the oldest veteran.

So our journey continues and the future is looking very, very bright. It is an exciting time for the whole club and as ever I am honoured to be club captain for what is now my 5th season. On behalf of all the players at the club, thank you for your continued support. You guys on the touchline really do make such a difference especially on the cold, wet winter days.

Enjoy the season and remember the more beer you buy me, the shorter my speeches will be.
